A Transcultural Figure. Portrayals of Mario Schifano from the 1990s to the 2010s

The article explores the figure of Mario Schifano (1934-1998) as a cultural icon through various artistic and literary perspectives. By analyzing a cross-sectional case study of works spanning genres, aesthetics, and styles, the study shows how Schifano has been portrayed in novels, poems, and visual works from 1990 to 2021, with a focus on his transcultural reception. Studying the reception of Schifano’s work and figure among creatives and intellectuals allows for an appreciation of the so-called “author-function” of Michel Foucault (What is an Author, 1969), which views the author as a “function of discourse.” In this regard, the novels of the writer and essayist Fulvio Abbate, the poems of the artist, writer, and director Gerard Malanga, and the works of street artist Leonardo Crudi are examined. These and other references reveal how Schifano has been interpreted as an Italian master, an ethical model, and an alternative icon. The study demonstrates that Schifano is a multifaceted figure whose legacy continues to influence artists from different generations.
L’articolo esplora la figura di Mario Schifano (1934-1998) in termini di icona culturale che attraversa diverse prospettive artistiche e letterarie. Analizzando una casistica di opere trasversale a generi, estetiche e stili, lo studio mostra come Schifano è stato ritratto in romanzi, poesie e opere visuali dal 1990 al 2021, con attenzione alla sua ricezione transculturale. Studiare la ricezione dell’opera e della figura di Schifano presso figure di creativi e intellettuali permette di apprezzare il verificarsi della cosiddetta “funzione-autore” di Michel Foucault (Che cos’è un autore, 1969), ovvero della visione dell’autore come “funzione del discorso”. A questo proposito, vengono esaminati i romanzi del narratore e saggista Fulvio Abbate, le poesie dell’artista, scrittore e regista Gerard Malanga, e le opere dello street artist Leonardo Crudi. Questi e altri riferimenti rivelano come Schifano sia stato interpretato come un maestro italiano, un modello etico e un’icona alternativa. Lo studio dimostra che Schifano è una figura poliedrica la cui eredità continua a influenzare artisti di diverse generazioni.
