Guido Crepax and the Book Reviews in Comics Form: The case of La Fiera Letteraria (1967) and Linus (1994-95)

The article analyzes Guido Crepax’s literary comic book reviews, that is, some plates that Crepax composed to give news about some editorial publications. The reviews were published in 1967 for the magazine La fiera letteraria (10 reviews) and for the comics magazine Linus between 1993 and 1994 (12 reviews). This issue is investigated in light of the history of literary reviewing and, more specifically, the tradition of comic book reviews, which has been developing since the early 1960s. For this reason, an in-depth study will be devoted to the memorable first series of comic reviews, produced between 1962 and 1963 by publicist Marcello Piccardo for the cultural pages of the newspaper Il Giorno. Piccardo’s reviews are distinguished by the attention that he devotes to the depiction of the reader and his reading experience.
The essay attempts to show how Crepax dismantles the review form and recomposes it in a novel form using the language of comics. In fact, the peculiarity of Crepax’s mature reviews (those of the 1990s) consists in his ability to combine two different discourses. On the one hand, the narration of the reading experience through the representation of Valentina as the prototypical reader, and on the other hand, a comic strip transposition of the reviewed story, that is, a kind of summary of the reviewed work. Guido Crepax implements the 1967 reviews, entirely devoted to the summary of the work reviewed, recovering the first historical reviews in comic form, those of Marcello Piccardo. The essay has a twofold purpose: it aims to make a contribution to the history of literary information, and it intends to advance studies on the relationship between Guido Crepax and literature.
L’articolo analizza le recensioni letterarie a fumetti di Guido Crepax, cioè alcune tavole che Crepax compose per dare notizia di alcune pubblicazioni editoriali. Le recensioni uscirono nel 1967 per la rivista La fiera letteraria (10 recensioni) e per la rivista di fumetti Linus tra il 1993 e il 1994 (12 recensioni). La questione viene studiata alla luce della storia della recensione letteraria e più nello specifico della tradizione di recensioni a fumetti, che si sviluppa a partire dai primi anni Sessanta. Per questa ragione un approfondimento sarà dedicato alla storica prima serie di recensioni a fumetti, realizzata tra il 1962 e il 1963 dal pubblicitario Marcello Piccardo per le pagine culturali del quotidiano Il Giorno. Le recensioni di Piccardo si contraddistinguono per l’attenzione dedicata alla raffigurazione del lettore e della sua esperienza di lettura.
Il saggio tenta di mostrare come Crepax smonti la forma recensione e la ricomponga in una forma inedita, resa possibile dall’utilizzo del linguaggio del fumetto. Infatti, la particolarità delle recensioni mature di Crepax (cioè quelle degli anni Novanta) consiste nella capacità di coniugare due discorsi diversi: da un lato la narrazione dell’esperienza di lettura, attraverso la rappresentazione di Valentina quale prototipico lettore, e dall’altro una trasposizione a fumetti della storia recensita, vale a dire una sorta di riassunto dell’opera recensita. Guido Crepax implementa le recensioni del 1967, interamente dedicate al riassunto dell’opera recensita, recuperando le prime storiche recensioni in forma di fumetto, quelle di Marcello Piccardo. Il saggio ha uno scopo duplice: da una parte vuole offrire un contributo alla storia dell’informazione letteraria e dall’altra intende portare avanti gli studi sui rapporti tra Guido Crepax e la letteratura.
